At first when I read the synopsis of this show and looked a the adjoining pic I admit I was turned off but after a few weeks of little to do and nothing to watch I once again went out randomly scouting around for anime.
This series is one of the best, in my opinion, that has been released within the past two years. The story is really down to earth and sheds a light on more realistic situations versus the overly done romantic drama we’re accustomed to in most shojo anime.
To some extent the main character reminds me of myself when I was in secondary school shy, withdrawn and freakishly afraid of guys, though the main character is still a bit of an exaggeration of me back then XD.
The story centres around Tsukimi a nerdy jellyfish otaku who live in a boarding house with other nerdy otaku girls, what’s funny is that they affirm this to the point where they consider themselves as “Nunz” as it obvious none of them intend on getting a boyfriend nor would any man right in the head would track them( one of her friends reminds me of Dale from King from the Hill XD). Additionally they are all so recluse that any person or thing that is “hip” or beautiful they go into a sort of petrified state because they cannot really deal with the situation well ( I can remember time like that in school ><)
Everything starts when Tsukimi visits a tropical fish store when she notices that one of the fish was not put into the tank properly ( this is the simplest way I can put what really was going on, the girl went into super technical mode which would be too much to type lol) but because the guy selling at the counter is a “ hipster” she comes across as some kind of weirdo when she explained herself. After a small scuffle with the employee there a super dolled up woman sees all this going on and decides to intervene and purchases the jellyfish for Tsukimi.
When they arrive at the boarding house Tsukimi is eager to get the woman out of the house mostly because her boarding mates would freak out because a “Hipster” was in their territory. But after a failed attempt to sneak her out the “ Hipster” chick ends up crashing there for the night.
The next morning all hell breaks loose when she wakes up to see that the “Hipster chick really is a guy in drag whom apparently just likes to wear women’s clothes ( fruits basket anyone”
At that point it seemed like the series was cliché but whoever the creator is really loves to play with the cliché and turn it upside down in the blink of an eye. I got caught so many time in the series so far thinking that “ Yeah yeah I know this crap is gonna happen” only to be saying “wtf” in the end. From then on all kinda craziness happens but if i told you then that would spoil the surprises.
The emotions and comedy is the most natural responses I’ve ever seen, I can seriously see myself acting out the same way if those situations presented itself.
I rate this series 7 out of 10 in my books but I only recommend this series to those who are fans of shojo, comedy, and slice of life.
If you want magical stuff and over romantic situations then check something else.
Well till next review ^ ^
